In the 1880s, the Buena Vista subdivision was a rustic resort named Montague & Porter's Park. The current version of the subdivision dates to the 1910s. Today, much of Buena Vista retains a park-like atmosphere, with open spaces, hilly terrain and a large brook, which the local Potawatomi tribe believed had medicinal properties.
